Boys Varsity and JV Basketball Teams Cut

There will be no boys varsity or junior varsity basketball team this year due to a shortage of high school boys willing to play.

Many returning star players graduated in 2015 or were undecided about returning. Many announcements were made, postings and emails were sent, but that did not strike enough interest to keep the teams afloat.

The varsity and JV coach, Dan Skaritka, said, “As Smithtown Christian School’s basketball coach for the last 10 years, it is EXTREMELY disappointing that the high school student body does not have an interest in the sport of basketball. It is disheartening that there aren’t even 10 boys in the entire high school that have a passion, let alone an interest, to attend basketball tryouts.”

Boys who show interest are still able to play on the junior high team. As for the return of these teams, that issue will be revisited in the 2016-2017 school year.
